The 4 Types of Permission Seekers

Most people are a combination, but usually have one dominant type. Read through and see where you recognize yourself.

Type 1

The Apologizer

Over-apologizing for existing

What they say

  • →"Sorry, can I just..."
  • →"Sorry for bothering you..."
  • →"Sorry, one more thing..."
  • →"Sorry I'm so [insert normal human quality]..."

What they do

  • →Apologize before speaking
  • →Apologize for having needs
  • →Apologize for taking up space
  • →Apologize for being themselves

Where this comes from

  • →Punished for needs as a child
  • →Told they were "too much"
  • →Learned that existence = burden
  • →Shamed for wanting or needing

The belief underneath

"My presence is an imposition. I need permission to take up any space at all."

The work

Catching each unnecessary apology and replacing it with a statement of fact or a boundary without apology.

Example transformation

Before

"Sorry, can I ask a question?"

After

"I have a question."
